Practice at home, one movement at a time.
These short videos are designed to help you review movements introduced in class and build familiarity through simple, comfortable practice. You do not need to practice perfectly or memorize the entire form. Start with a few minutes and gradually build your practice.
1. Start Here:
How to Practice Tai Chi at Home
- Focus on one movement at a time
- Pay attention to weight shifting, relaxation, balance, and coordination. Read more of why balance matters.
- Progress gradually
2. Movement Practice Videos
Weight Shifting
A simple 3-minute practice for becoming familiar with shifting your weight from one leg to the other while maintaining relaxed posture and balance.
Practice points
- Keep the movement comfortable and unhurried.
- Notice which leg is supporting your weight.
- Keep the body relaxed rather than leaning.
- Let the arms move naturally with the body.
- Focus on smooth weight transfer rather than quantity.
Brush Knee and Twist Step
Practice the basic coordination of stepping, shifting weight, and moving the arms together.
Practice points
- Begin slowly.
- Pay attention to weight shift or the arm movement. One thing one time till you are comfortable to add more.
- Keep the shoulders relaxed.
- Practice on both sides when appropriate.
- Do a few repetitions at a comfortable pace. Once the basic sequence feels familiar, gradually make the movement smoother.
Standing Meditation
Use standing meditation to become more aware of posture, breathing, balance, and bodily sensations.
Practice points
- Stand comfortably rather than forcing an ideal posture.
- Keep the knees unlocked.
- Relax the shoulders and arms.
- Breathe naturally.
- Notice how the body feels rather than trying to achieve a particular sensation.
Suggested practice
Begin with a short period, such as 1–3 minutes or 10 breaths only, and gradually increase as comfortable. A seated version can be used if needed.
Grasp Sparrow’s Tail
Practice the basic coordination of shifting weight, turning, and moving the arms together through a continuous sequence.
Practice points
- Pay attention to the weight shift or the arm movement. One thing at a time until you are comfortable adding more.
- Keep the shoulders relaxed and avoid using unnecessary force.
- Pay attention to the transitions between movements rather than treating each movement as separate.
- Practice both sides when appropriate.
- Do a few repetitions at a comfortable pace. Once the basic sequence feels familiar, gradually make the movement smoother.
3. How to Use These Videos
- Watch: Watch the movement once before practicing.
- Follow: Practice along with the video slowly.
- Repeat: Repeat the movement several times without worrying about perfection.
- Notice: Pay attention to weight shifting, balance, relaxation, breathing, and coordination.
- Stop while it still feels comfortable: A few minutes of regular practice is more useful than forcing a long session. The former is easier for you to keep on practicing Tai Chi.
The goal is not to perform the movement perfectly. It is to become familiar with the movement and gradually develop a more comfortable, coordinated, and relaxed way of moving.
4. Class Calendar
If you are currently attending my class of LPC community education of Fall 2026, use these videos as a supplement to our in-person practice. Each week, I may suggest one or two movements to review at home.
